I have both, after eq the az100 sound more special. However out of the box the xm5 is very satisfying and also improves with eq (excited preset is pretty good too). az100 sounds weird out of the box, I prefered the az80 it sounded much more natural.

Been using XM5 for over a year, don’t think they are top tier, maybe your list should include B&W Pi8, Gemini 2, Noble Rex5?

Had the Sennheiser Momentum 3's, until the left earbud started playing up. Went with the Az100, after much research.... and 3days later I still can't get the right sound. They lack a crispness and punch and have a slight muffled sound. The Sennheisers were immersive, sharp and with a perfect balance of bass & crunch to guitars. Gonna persevere with fiddling the EQ, but so far, not so good. 😢

Glad to learn about the Technics. I've been looking for a pair to replace my Sony 1000MX4 and I have been disappointed with Sony to give their buds another shot. My Sony Linkbuds blew a driver after less than a year of occasional use (a few days a week for a 2-3 hours), and I have been having charging issues with the MX4 buds which lead me into the rabbit hole of their mid-generation battery change and software update based on the newer battery tolerances that ruined many set. My issue with the battery issue was more in how Sony chose to handle it, or lack of handling, than the mistake itself.

It's true that I consider the Tecnics AZ100 to be better and more complete earbuds than the Sony XM5, but to say that the AZ100 have a better ANC than the XM5 is wrong, just as it's wrong to say that the XM5 have a phone call quality at the level of the AZ100, honestly, your observations are really dubious, it seems like you haven't really tested these products 🤔

Sony's xm5s are the only ones that stay in my ear when eating, and not having to constantly adjust them to stop them from falling out like silicone eartips.

Sony XM series are very overmarketed and overhyped. Ok, the ANC is top tier, but for example the musical sound quality is always mediocore, and the glossy surface is terrible on the XM5 buds. For me the Technics AZ100's pure sound quality without ANC is ,,S" tier, never heard like this before. It has very unique, warm, smooth, non-fatiguing and distortion free sound. Way better, than the great AZ80 too.
