The point of a compressor is to make everything equally loud. It can do that by reducing the loud bits or by making the quite bits louder.

Compression is often mistaken for "making it sound better" because you can hear more details and engineers tend to think that if you hear more details that's somehow better.

Sometimes you really need to hear more details, like in vocals, but these days ":engineers" start by compressing everything and then add more compression to it and finally run it through a compressor. The end result is boring and dull but it grabs your attention, you have to listen to it whether you want it or not and that makes you remember the song and buy the single.

Compression is basically marketing.

What does compressor do?.. Dont care.. Your eyes are always alive.. Thats dynamic range..
