Just an addendum to this, clipping can also be a useful tool when mixing. However it has to be controlled and used purposefully, if it's a part of the recording it usually is a poor result. Always be careful with clipping

I master whole songs to -6dB but individual tracks is a bit of a wild west
I have used soft clipping to make certain virtual instruments have a percussive-ness that they just don't have out of the box
