One insane huge reason for the confusion is the ai generated subs and missing content from each episode (there are shorts at the end of each episode explaining more about lore and how the magic system works). This is a great step, they are also correcting the subs, now if the missing content is added, I will be honestly praising Crunchyroll on listening to the feedback.

honestly i like the concept of a story were both yourself and the main protagonist are confused by the plot and what is happening it just helps me feel closer to the protagonist and view him as more of a viewpoint character.

Xuanhuan is legitimately one of the most fantastical generes of fiction and is very out there when adapted to anything beyond just words really. Be prepared to get lost at points as it does happen with how abstract/lovecraftian this genre can get, but in exchange you'll likely get a visual treat like here you won't be able to experience elsewhere🔥
