The Exu are a powerful contemporary jazz trio from Leeds, creating attention-grabbing music combining in-the-moment improvised creativity, concise energetic writing, and a lean rock/pop aesthetic for the frenzied digital age. The group brings together saxophonist James Mainwaring (best-known as part of Mercury Prize and MOBO-nominated Roller Trio), in-demand Irish bassist Dave Kane and Norwegian drummer Emil Karlsen who have performed at many of Europe’s most prestigious jazz and improvised music festivals.
Named after a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting and inspired by the artists multi-faceted stylistic approach, The Exu make layered, intense, creative & beautiful, thought provoking, genre fluid improvised music.
We loved seeing The Exu’s dynamic energy and infectious creativity on our stage, and are excited to share their set with you!
