A missile launched by Iran on June 15 struck the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, marking the first direct attack on the prestigious Israeli research centre. The strike ignited a fire in a laboratory building, with search teams still combing the debris amid fears that individuals may be trapped. While no official casualties have been confirmed, the symbolic nature of the hit has rattled Israel’s scientific and academic circles. The Weizmann Institute, a key contributor to Israel’s technological and defence capabilities, had never previously been targeted. The missile formed part of a broader Iranian retaliation to Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, which targeted over 100 Iranian military and nuclear sites. In response, Iran fired more than 150 ballistic missiles and drones, some of which penetrated Israeli defences. Other regions suffered casualties, including six deaths in Bat Yam and four in Tamra. The strike underscores an escalation, with non-military sites now firmly in the crosshairs.
