Baradello Castle has been the symbol of Como's history for thousands of years, a first fortification dates back to the Byzantines, but the structure as we see it today was built by Federico Barbarossa, Como's ally against Milan. The Castle was the scene of the wars between Ottone Visconti and Napo Torriani. Here Napo Torriani was left to die after his defeat to Ottone.
