In August 2015, a French family visited White Sands National Park in New Mexico, hoping to enjoy a scenic hike through the famous white gypsum dunes. They set out with excitement, taking photos and exploring the landscape—but what began as a peaceful walk on the Alkali Flat Trail quickly turned into a tragedy. Unprepared for the extreme desert heat, and with limited water, a series of small decisions led to devastating consequences.
