How does CLIPPING in music production actually work…? #musicproductiontips

You might have heard of clipping before, and experienced it when recording or mixing a track - but do you know how it actually works…?

Your waveforms literally get their peaks ‘chopped’ off if you go above the 0dbFS threshold.

This causes new high-frequency harmonics to be introduced, which creates that buzzing, glitchy sound and distortion we associate with it.

This sound that’s created is exactly why we try to avoid going above that 0dbFS threshold - unless using a soft clipper for intentional clipping on something like drums.
